I'm curious: how old are "original" Pokemon fans (i.e. people who were involved in the franchise from 1999-2003ish)?

I'm 32, but I was 14 when it came out. I love RBY but people who think it or GSC are the best games need to pull their heads out of their asses. The series gets better overall each gen (though the rate of progress is not even) and watching the series evolve has been amazing.

Honestly, I wouldn't even be interested in either (G)RBY or GSC anymore if it wasn't for the multitude of glitches and arbitrary code executions that continue to be found and documented. I spent more time messing around with that save corruption glitch in Red on VC than I have playing Yellow legit. I've also abused the Mew glitch left and right and I'd be shocked if Bank even let me upload a single one of those lvl 7 Pokemon I've hoarded.
>>
25, 8 when Pokemania hit

I still remember my first booster pack pulls, best one being 1st edition Pidgeotto
>>
I'm 23 and I played Red because I lived in the middle of nowhere and my dad had an original gameboy that I played the shit out of. I was late to the party, but I loved Gold / Silver and I played many, many hours of Ruby when it came out.
>>
i'm 29
and i started with red. i was twelve at the time when pokemon hit europe in late '99
>>
21. Back in Gen I, I played Blue with my brother while he played Red. I must have been pretty young but I definitely remember playing the Gen I games, then eventually I got Yellow. My brother helped me understand the concept of levels, and somehow I got my Pikachu to Lv 99 without knowing what a level was. So he saw my Pikachu and was like "here, let me show you something". He defeated a Golbat, got my Pikachu to Lv 100 and I remember being awed.

Later he got Gold and I got Silver. He got Crystal, but I remember throwing a fit because I wanted to play it too.

Come Gen III though he lost interest while I've laways been a huge fan.

23 here,

OP Here

If you're conscious enough to remember playing Pokemon in 2003 or before (i.e. when Misty was there, when Pokemania was at its height), then vote on the poll. It doesn't matter if you started late or just got a small taste of it, vote.

But if you're young enough that you only remember 2004 onwards (i.e. post-Pokemania), don't vote.
>>
>>30172225
Actually you were in 1st-2nd grade (if you were 6-7 in 1998-1999)
>>
>>30172269
Can confirm, same age as him, I remember being in first grade when people started bringing in the TCG. I also remember some classmates talking about how Diglett could dig into your skin and chew on your blood vessels, and it put me off for a while.
>>
>>30170581
I'm 31. Got red the day it came out. Still have the cart somewhere. Despite that, some of my favorite Pokemon are actually the newer ones.
>>

I'm 22, I remember playing Red on my game boy when I was around 4-5

Nah, I was in kindergarten. My mom homeschooled me for a year, then realized how stupid/hard it is, and enrolled me in public school.
They put me a year behind I guess cause my mom fucked up and didn't teach me shit.
>>
Weird how all of the late 20s (except 27) are lagging behind, even though they were the prime audience for the series. Instead, the poll is mostly dominated by 20-26.

Maybe late 20s folks just don't waste their time on 4chan as much.

28 here and got red in 1999. All gens are kinda cool but I am afraid that for the first time I won't be able to remember the names of the new pokemon as 90% of their names are shitty and unintuitive, at least in German.
>>
I'm a bit surprised there are more 31 year olds on the poll than 30 year olds

I've always heard from friends that 1985/1986 should be the "real" dividing line between Gen X and Millennials, because 85fags were the last of those who felt "too old" for Pokemon when it came out, while 86fags were the first of those young enough to consider the series their childhood. But apparently 85fags enjoyed the original games too.
>>
28. Was also the one who started the 'Mew under the Truck' rumour in my school.

It's weird that, even though they're called "genwunners", most of them tend to (perhaps subconsciously?) include Gen 2 (sometimes even Gen 3) Pokemon in their definition of the "old/good Pokemon".
>>
>>30170581
31. Didn't really like red and blue when the craze was starting up. I drew pokes for friends and collected cards to practice drawing until Gold/Silver came out. It was then I got my first handheld, a GBC, with Yellow and Gold for Christmas.

I count myself as a fan of Gen1 and 2 well enough to see the "genwunner" hater fad as retarded, but my personal favorite gens are 3 and 4r.

>>
>>30174055
Gen 1 and gen 2 were released a year appart and are a continuity, as well as most gen 2 pokemon were probably in its final dev stages during gen 1 release. its natural they'd be grouped together

Nobody ever bundles gen 3 with gen1/2
>>
>>30171297
The graphics of the games get better but the pokemon get uglier and the show gets worse voice actors as time goes on.
>>
>>30170581
I'm 19 (1997). By the age of 3 I could (barely) read and my parents gave me and my sister (born in 91) Blue and Yellow. It was right before GS came out, so I skipped gen2, but by the time RS came out I was already heavily into pokemon.
>>
I still remember the week pokemania hit my school. Suddenly the one Japanese kid in the class felt like such hot shit, bringing in all sorts of merch and passing it out. Kids spouted nonsensical bullshit. We had Pokemon card battles over each other's lunches (I remember winning a kid's pizza one day. I can't believe I actually ate it and left him with nothing.) And we pretended to be the legendary birds at recess. I was upset that I didn't get to be articuno even before I knew what articuno was.

I remember moving to Canada at age 8 in 1998. Three weeks before school started, no Pokemon. Then it just came out of nowhere somehow. I even remember my life before Pokemon... Watching Rugrats, Hey Arnold, etc on YTV on the zone. Then suddenly it was racing home to watch Pokemon at 4 pm. Later that year I turned 9 and at Christmas, I got Pokemon Blue.

21, my first games were Blue and Yellow, and have played every main series game since.

I initially skipped Platinum cause I really didn't like Diamond/Pearl and I was going through a "too cool and mature for Pokemon phase."

Eventually picked up Plat in high school and bred my first competitive team and have been back into it ever since.
>>
>>30174520
Oh come on now. The original Red, Blue and Yellow are trash now. The progenitors of an era sure, but they're trash.
>>
>>30175317
Was platinum really that great? It's the one pokemon game I skipped and I've been hearing a lot of good things about it on this board. (Story wise as well as gameplay)
>>
>>30170581
I don't know if it makes me a real genwunner if I played FireRed. Literally the only Pokemon games I had as a kid were FireRed and the RubySapphire version of Pinball. We were poor and getting a video game was an extremely rare occurence. I mostly just loved watching the show and collecting the cards and the Tomy Figures before even playing any of the games. I think a lot of kids thought the games came from the TV show. At least in my class. Granted I'm only 21 now so really kids that are my age only felt the aftershock of what was Pokemania.

>be with mom in K-Mart
>Playing Yellow, had a very hard time catching Zapdos
>Eventually catch it, save game
>GBC turns off
>Put it down inside a shoebox in the cart because common sense wasn't a thing back then
>Figure it'd be fine since we were already in line to pay
>get to the car
>get extra batteries out
>ask mom where the shoebox was
>She decided not to take them and left them with the cashier
>mfw

I mean I got another, nicer looking GBC (lost one was light blue, new one was the translucent purple) along with another copy of Yellow, but I still feel really sad about it to this day.
>>
>>30175398
Platinum was great. Story was so legit.
>>
>>30175398
I can't really comment story-wise cause I haven't played it in about 6 years, but it definitely FELT better than D/P.

I really would recommend it.
>>
>>30175434
Wait, why not just go back inside K-Mart and get it? Sounds like you hadn't driven home yet.

28 next month. I was 9 in the fourth grade when pokemon blew up. I distinctly remember on my 10th birthday thinking "If pokemon were real I'd be getting my trainer's license."
>>
>>30175473
One of the reasons I avoided it was because I clocked in about 600 hours in diamond and was afraid it would have pretty much the same story. I'll probably pick up a copy later though, /vp/ seems to really like platinum so yeah.
>>
24, started playing at Ruby/Sapphire.

Was a fan of the anime and tcg during first gen. It started for me around 1st or 2nd grade, I think. Earliest memory was sharing interests with a friend in 2nd or 3rd grade

We were still in the parking lot, so after about 10 minutes of me panicking we went back inside.

It wasn't in the box and the cashier was playing dumb so my mom didn't believe me. To this day she still thinks that I just lost it somewhere in the store and was trying to shift the blame elsewhere.

28. I was literally the perfect age for this. First instantly getting hooked on the show before school while I stuffed my fat face with cornflakes, then very shortly after getting Blue. I want to go back.

I'm 25, still remember everything the franchise went through since its inception. I know it sounds completely fucking stupid ( especially considering im not that old ) but i cant even take people much younger than me seriously as fans of the franchise when they havent lived through its apex, it was something else entirely, a totally different experience. Like the beatles for kids. I was also a big dinos/animals/monsters kid so pokemon hit the sweet spot at just the right time, got me more or less hooked for life.

Played all games but gen 4 only did so on an emulator since i never had a ds. Also been on this shithole for about 10 years and seeing people lately be genuinely nostalgic for gen4 because it was their first game made feel terrified by the age shift in this website and the underage shitposting, it made me really think its time to go. It also explains /tv/'s fascination with harry potter threads, but i digress

>>30175398
Its a really good "standalone" game, along with emerald. It improved on everything its predecessors did, from story to gameplay and technical aspects ( dp were slow as shit ), and you can play it for a gorillion hours without trading or battling with other people and still have an amazing experiece. Its the pokemon formula perfected imo, the only faults i can come up with is the absolute garbage tier legendaries that gen4 brought along ( and gf continued that trend in 5 )
