Sinnoh was my 1st gen (didn't get into pokemon until my teens), so I might be a little biased here. Sinnoh was definitely not shit. The original red, blue, green, and yellow were all a broken mess only redeemed by muh nostalgia and the actual pokemon themselves. The remakes were really good, tho. Hoenn was meh, Johto is my 2nd favorite region and gen AND has my fave pokemon, unova was OK, Kalos was mediocre, and Alola is god tier.
So here's my rating list:
Alola > Johto > Sinnoh > Kanto = Unova = Hoenn
I'm taking remakes and the originals into account here, so that's why Kanto isn't dead last
The Hoenn games in general were all meh and kinda forgettable to me. I don't know why, but none of the pokemon there really appeal to me.

I guess you really like how Aqua and Magma had some original objectives for villains, but original doesn't mean good. They were absurd objectives at their core, and the story lacked any kind of surprise because a 10 year old would be able to point out why they would fail.
