Funnily enough the alchemy theories were right. The plot talks about the union or marriage of solgaleo and lunala, their shinies are bright red like rubedo, lunala is literally described as being the female and solgaleo as the male. Necrozma is clearly the first stage of Magnum Opus which is Putrefaction also known as Nigredo (death and decay). But in alchemy Nigredo isn't just black gross decaying matter, it's actually a "dark" rainbow. You know how Alolan muk is all colorful due to eating oils etc? That's essentially Nigredo and Necrozma has the same concept. It produces rainbows but is freezing cold and black.

I don't care what they name these things, they're just legendaries with a twist.

Original Psychic/Dragon form is the Ultra Beast form. Current form was born in the Pokemon World. Just like how Cosmog is an Ultra Beast but Solgaleo and Lunala are "the Pokemon of the Sunne and Moone".

rubedo hasn't been made into a pokemon, but the shiny forms of lunala and solgaleo are both red. Essentially in alchemy citrinitas is skipped over and both lunala and solgaleo can be looked at as albedo, their shinies are their "perfect" foms though. That's why they chose such a weird colour palette for both of them, it's clearly meant to show that theyre married or bonded and have reached Rubedo together.

They're a trinity themed after the three primary goals of alchemy. Solageo is turning lead into gold (steel-type), Lunaala is the creation of artificial life (ghost-type), and Necrozma is the creation of the philosopher's stone. The first two goals were tied to the sun and moon respectively, while the third was thought to be a combination of them.

Then there's the handful of idiots who still think that the third member is Zygarde, because "Corpus (the stuff that the Philosopher's stone is made of) is drawn as a cube and Zygarde is in a cube!"

Necrozma's concept is refraction and Nigredo, which is pretty fucking cool desu. Sorta reminds me of platinum being not only space, time and antimatter, they were also all states of matter being solid liquid and gas.

I actually have a plot in mind similar to this:
