What? Defeating N makes you champion because he defeated the previous champion.

You need beat the Elite 4 and the Champion to become the new Champion.
Not beat the Elite 4, take a tour through a castle, switch your team around, catch a Legendary, visit the Pokemon Center and challenge the Champion.
There's a reason N didn't just beat Alder when he the Dragon, instead fought the E4. Hilbert beat the champion, he didn't become one.

Also being the hero of truth/ideals and having a sequel where NPCs talk about him left and right gives him more character then other protags.
