Its really that the whole game has bad plot focus but they upgraded a bit from x and y. I'm sure they will get better as they start doing these stories more and more.

I'm honestly not sure what to make of the story in this game. It's certainly better than X and Y and I like that they've changed things up to give the franchise a little more flavor/culture, but it seems so... empty at the same time. We meet a huge cast of characters, but that's really all we do. Meet them. The only ones who really matter in the end are Lillie, Gladion, Lusamine, Kukui, and Hau. Hanu, Hapu, and Guzma matter a little here and there, but in terms of their actual importance to the plot, there is none. You could remove them and virtually nothing would change. Then you have literal whos like that Elite Four member who I'd only ever heard of before from an NPC in the DEMO.

It's like there's a story that they WANTED to tell but were told "Nah, kids won't get this or won't care so just make it about this useless cunt and this obnoxious native kid and call it a day."

It was really just a weak and narrow plot line with rushed sections and random cut scenes. The thing is I cant call it bad for a kids game or a pokemon game. It had basic structure unlike x and y which was a cluster fuck.

The thing is pokemon games always had that potential to have a lore and story. They already had lore right from gen 1. I feel like the loose way the story was told in gen 1-3 (really only gen 1-2) felt more mature. Actually making these shiny stories gave it a kid like feeling because of how low quality it is.

And there's the main problem with most of the characters. Ultimately the only ones who really get any real attention are Hau, Kukui, Gladion and of course Lillie, with Lillie eating up the largest portion. They really needed to spread the time around, instead of shafting most characters in favor of Lillie and to a lesser extent Hau.

Worst part is that Hau has no real personality beyond "HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY" and Lillie, for all her focus, is as interesting as a sack of dirt.

I REALLY wish they invested more time for development into Hau. I really feel like the pressure of being the Grandson of a Kahuna. We really see that better when he talks about his father leaving Alola post game.

I think it's more that they've hit an awkward spot of how much story they can fit in. As it was, you've already got a ton of people complaining about the game being too linear/cutsceney. I won't disagree that they misbudgeted some of what they had (you can cut some stuff away from Lillie and Hau without making things go badly, for example, but even cutting down on Hau doesn't give you that much, because characters like Guzma don't just need cutscene time, they need scenes and encounters built around them).

If I were keeping the same general story, I think I would do something along the lines of...

1. Keep the 1st island basically the same. It hits all the story beats it needs to. Mmmaybe add a team skull encounter, but I think it did a good job of showing them off.

2. Step up Team Skull's presence on the second island. Have at least one more fight where Gladion's with Team Skull before having him split off, give Plumeria an encounter or two to at least make her poison theme clear. There's only so much you can fit here, but having a short Team Skull bit between each trial, even if it's just on the level of them trying to steal that Slowpoke, would go a long ways. Have Guzma show up at the end of this island.

3. Third island's... honestly mostly fine? Po Town was a good setpiece. This is pretty much the space for Gladion to switch sides, have Guzma running around being menacing, and have the last Plumeria encounter as a midboss.

4. Aether Foundation: the actual Aether Foundation segment was done well. The problem is that after it you jump straight to the end. Maybe you just shorten the dungeon proper, and use that extra space for a quick revisit of the three islands you've been to, to fight off the Ultra Beasts for at least a little while (while Aether tries to stop you). From there...

5. The last island. I think this was... alright, but I'd like it if you had a quick Ground Trial with a totem 'mon or something--having only Dragon here felt weird.

I disagree on the third isle and fourth. My main issue with Aether is that they just kind of become 'antagonists' out of nowhere and then are quickly dealt with. It's way too sudden with no build-up and is then resolved too quickly as well.

I'm with you four the second island, but I think the third should do something to set up Aether, even if only a bit. Have Plumeria and Guzma switch roles, with her being the one you fight at the end of Po Town. I'd also come up with a better reason than "Oh no they stole some random Yungoos that you have no reason to care about."

Maybe have them steal Cosmog instead, then you get through in time enough to find Guzma handing it off to Faba, before escaping with him and leaving you to fight Plumeria. Also don't have Aether be 'defeated' so quickly and let Lusamine be an actual threat. That way you feel like there's an actual reason to fight her instead of "WELL THAT'S WHAT LILLIE WANTS!"
