I don't even know, man.

Gen 1 was the best time, but the games are awfully slow; they only get credit for being the first. Gen 2 was fun as well but it was sort of the time a lot of people my age (i.e. OG Pokemon fans) dropped off the bandwagon a bit. Gen 3 was good but the power creep started to rear its ugly head, and gen 4, despite introducing some great new ideas, were mechanically pretty bad. HGSS still the best games, though. Gen 5 brought even better Pokemon and a clean slate, and also cool mechanics like the PWT. Then gen 6 brought 3D but at the cost of... a lot. Gen 7 I don't know yet, but I really dislike the art style; if I can't keep my cute chibi models I at least want good clothes.

been into pokemon since gen 1 here, mostly played gen 2, just started a game of pearl and 3 gyms in I have to say it's the most polished overall

Gen 5.

Best story, and all games were solid unlike some other gens. Only new Pokemon in BW made it feel like a unique experience comparable to Gen 1. Direct sequel was also a great idea, only con was not being able to face your old PC ala Red

N's castle crashing down on the Elite Four is still the best story moment in any of the games

actually I meant diamond but I can't change because of an autistic habit of mine where I always play the version with the "duller" color scheme, like blue, silver, sapphire, and diamond, black, when I play gen 6 it'll be X and finally Moon

Gen 2 was Gen 1 but better.

I have to say, Gen 7 is really about to shine out as my favorite. A lot of really quality in terms of variety of new things to do, there's fun character dynamics, and the Ultra Beasts seem to be more enjoyable than just having some stock Legendaries.
Before that though, Gen 6 and 4 have always been tied for me personally.

Gen II was my favourite at time of release. Black & White were trash, but B2/W2 were admittedly pretty good.

I don't give a flying fuck about the shitty stories of Pokemon games, so X&Y were perfectly fine for me, had a blast with them.

So far Moon is really boring and annoying as fuck with all of the characters directing me exactly where to go all of the time, but that Lurantis fight was pretty fun.
