It's sometimes very luck based
In one game one of the NPC had 4 points and i still won with only 2 because i had more pokemon remaining that the NPC

They will always go for something they can OHKO, and preferably a Pokemon slower than theirs - ie any Alola Pokemon :^)
I've seen them do a lot of ganging up and it's often on another NPC. Do not ever enter Royale without Protect on every Pokemon, you need to scout their targeting. It's a trash game mode though, you can only do so much.
