Fighting type moves didn't really start shining until gen 4 with Close Combat, Focus Miss and Drain Punch, they peaked with gen 5 but with weather wars and the synergy so many pokemon got from sand as well as that insane special bulk and versatility ttar got made him relevant anyways.

Why is Tyranitar so good? Serious question. Comparing him to say, Metagross. Tyranitar obviously has a better ability and better special bulk, but Metagross has an immunity, 1 4x resist, 8 2x resist, and only 4 weakness (and no 4x weakness). He outspeeds him and has marginally better Attack. He still resists Stealth Rocks.

Does it mainly come down to the ability? In a meta with lots of Drizzle and Drought pokemon does Metagross become better than Tyranitar (or is TTar even better because he turns off their weather)?

This is exactly why Gengar is so much worse now. In earlier gens, you'd bring gengar in because you predicted the EQ. You could actually bring it in on things like Lando-T locked into EQ or in on other ground types and then force them out with icy wind or similar.

I think the much higher special defense is what makes the difference. But TTar is also great at shutting down opposing weather users, it can switch in to cancel out sun or rain and tank whatever special attack is incoming thanks to sand. TTar really has to watch out for physical fighting types but that's really it. Metagross seems to get fucked over by a larger amount of mons.

I think Ttar is also more threatening and unpredictable.
