GameFreak must have completely ignored people's complaints about Gen 6.

They have a lot of the same problems (handholding, annoying cutscenes, no exploration, shitty graphics, etc.).

I hope this is just because Gen 7 was already in progress by the time Gen 6 was released. I hope they address these issues and go back to the old style of play in Gen 8. But knowing GF, I'm not gonna hold my breath.

This was genuinely my favorite pokemon game, and I've played them all. I hated X/Y, liked ORAS, and loved this one. D/P/Pl used to be my favorites.

The only way I can enjoy these games now is to do a mono-run.

In fact, I think sun moon is probably the best time to do a mono run since you don't have to put up with HMs letting you use whatever you want. You might not get much use out of z-moves for a while but who gives a shit about those.

Trials are fun, but they are absolutely piss easy, you literally cant deny it. Most consist of you walking 5 steps before the camera pans over where you're meant to go, repeat 3 or 4 times. The only thing that could be difficult is the totems, but thats only if you dont use type advantages at all

Well actually no I guess I did use z-status moves a few times. Stopped using z attack moves after my wishi 1-shot the trial Salazzle before it could ever call for help. Reset and went back experience the fight as it was meant to be enjoyed, full of debuff cancer. Lost 2.5 mons. Felt a lot more satisfying.

It occurs to me after you asking me this though what's going on here.

The game is balanced for karenfags, with a few crutch mechanics dolled up to appeal to Johnny players specifically thrown in for tots who can't git gud to that level.

There were a shitload of cutscenes in Gen V and gen 4 to some extent, they just were less noticeable because the camera angle didn't change.

People always say this about every game, and they almost never explain what they really want when they say it aside from HURRR DURR MUH EMERALD BATTLE TOWER. Game freak doesn't redo things. They haven't brought back old mechanics ever. Get fucking used to it. This is a flaw, but it's a flaw with almost every other game in the franchise.

The gyms have never offered any challenge at all. The "puzzles' they sometimes shoehorned in were mind-bogglingly simple and only served to artificially bloat the time it took to move on. Trials are better than gyms.

There were a lot of little branching paths that usually had a cool interaction or worthwhile tm or cool pokemon, and looping around the islands and opening up shortcuts and paths felt great. It felt like Bloodborne exploration on a smaller scale.

i absolutely love this game, but the amount of railroading was absolutely obnoxious.

when i saw that rotomdex showed you where to go next to progress the story, i was excited because it showed me where i could go before continuing the plot.

.. until the game started to not only tell me "that's not the right way," but also spend a good 5-6 seconds showing a black screen to move me two feet.

i will say that it happened less often after the second island, and mostly stopped after you get your box legendary, but up until that point it was grating.

still think this game is fantastic, especially after the travesty that was ORAS
