You could say he's a friendly rival, but Hugh was a good buddy and strong rival, and he wasn't even trying to outperform you.
Hau is kind of a weakling, it's been stated a lot in early game. He struggles while others like Hugh and Blue blaze right through.

Normally I'd dislike Hau and those types of characters, but I was fine with him. I'd take three Haus any day than the mess that was X/Y's garbage cast.

Seriously the Kalos circle of friendship shit was the worst thing I've seen in Pokemon.
It makes the game so hard to replay watching that shit. They are all so dull and retardedly easy.

I like Hau, he aspires to be as good as you. You are his test, his gauge to see if he can live up to his family name.
You beat him and he keeps getting back up to try again.
And in a way he learns a lot through his journey with you and becomes a pretty impressive trainer quite quickly.

I even like Gladion because even though he seems somewhat impressive at first, or at least he likes to think he is impressive and tough and emo and all that, you put him in his place quickly enough, but he doesn't get too salty over it. He's proud but reflective and in a way you help push him to try to bond with type null more but also to not purely rely on him.

Hau is great and easily the best outright cheery "rival". He plays great off Gladion too. The trio of you three's expressions after the Multi Battle against Faba and an Employee is fucking gold.

Lillie's been pretty shit so far. Don't know why people are obsessive over her, but apparently she gets her big character moment a bit after where I am so maybe she'll redeem herself.
