I think Gamefreak going back to the drawing board and re-conceptualising what Pokemon is all about was a real good thing.

You can tell the writers had ton of fun making this game. (I mean read the pokedex entries for starters)

It fits the theme that Alola is basically a real laid-back Hawaii-like place.
So even your villains are pretty laid back too.

That's why Lusamine is so dangerous. She actually has motivation to cause shit to go down. She's like a JRPG madman villain that's totally out of place in such a chill place.
