Next Generation they're going to introduce Acidic Mist and Frigid Mist, two new forms of entry hazards.
Acidic Mist Lowers the Defense of all Pokemon on your opponents side who enter the field by 1 Stage. Steel and Poison Types are immune to it's effect. Pokemon that take Super Effective Damage from Poison get lowered by 2 Stages.
Frigid Mist Lowers the Special Defense of all Pokemon who enter the field on your opponents side by 1 Stage. Only Ice Types are Immune. Pokemon who take Super effective damage from Ice get lowered by 2 stages.
Rapid Spin and Defog still clear them. Weather and Terrains do not.

Icefags and Poisonfags have bitched enough that Gamefreak decided to spend two generations trying to bring them up to snuff while not hurting Masuda's feelings by nerfing Water Types.

That's the point though. It's because Gamefreak is trying every little thing they can besides making Ice Resist Water.
Though their backup strategy is already to make Scald work like Freeze Dry if they do make Ice Resist Water.
