you have to sit through a cutscene where you get back to town, the kahuna returns, and you talk about what just happened before he introduces the starters and immediately asks which one you want

it's not terribly long but it's long enough that it's annoying, I didn't expect it to happen in the middle of a cutscene the first time so I didn't save at all and had to reset the whole game
