Megas will return in the Sinnoh remakes, let me give you a schedule:

Mid 2017 - GSC VC release on 3DS.
Late 2017 - Switch game, not developed by GF, Colosseum/XD style doubles oriented game set in Kanto, maximum genwun pandering to shift consoles at Christmas. Several new megas included to entice completionists, including megas for the gen 2 starters
early 2018 - Sinnoh remakes for 3DS announced
late 2018 - Sinnoh remakes released, include new megas


Possibly a Necrozma game in there somewhere, if it comes it'll be a SM port to Switch for the most part, they stopped doing third games because their sales were never that great but moving a modified version of the game to a new console might help. All depends on how many units the Switch shifts between now and the end of this gen which will certainly occur in 2020.

They have the same appeal as typing gems, only more flashy. Nuke something with your unique special attack, OHKO a normal counter with a stupid strong coverage move, etc. etc.

Gems were ok at best because they could activate abilities at the same time, or give you a way to kill shit in VGC faster in a way.
You could have used more than one gem if you really needed/wanted
Z-Moves are just.. i don't know. i don't see why would you use them in singles, and in VGC there are better options.

Not every z-move is a nuke. There is also non damaging z-moves that have cool side effect. For example, Z Conversion gives you +1 to all stats plus the Conversion effect.
