There are apparently some issues with translating the Japanese humor that much of SM is hinged on, so they had to produce two different test versions of SM1 to focus groups to see if they preferred the Japanese comedy translated straight, or a localized version that dumps it out for typical relatable burgerisms at cost of script accuracy.

Alola barely has any pokemon for Ash to capture. Especially with such a small dex again.

You have to factor out the legends, Ultra beasts, island guardians, all the pokemon owned by the other main characters and Team Rocket, all the feminine pokemon, all the fish pokemon, all the redundant birds or grass pokemon Ash never gets, etc....and there's not much else.

Its why I can see Ash getting two starters again, he doesn't have much choices otherwise. I do think the sand castle pokemon would be a nice new "6th slot" pokemon for him though ala Glalie, Gible, and Noviern.

I agree with this. S/M's comedic slice-of-life schoolhouse approach seems like too much of a departure from XY&Z's more serious, shonenlike approach. There needs to be at least some feeling of continuity. It doesn't feel like the same anime at all.

The dub wasn't even bad back then, though- they would keep all the Japanese OST in the Movies during AG & the voice acting was actually good back then. The script was mostly faithful except for some TR-added jokes as well. The only gripe I had with the AG dub was that only 25% of the OST made its way into the episodes, but that's far better than can be said for all of XY's dub and late BW's dub.
