I played all three due to my autismal need to complete everything the series has to offer, if even just to complain about how bad it is. So all of these games have been done and dusted for over half a year.

CQ's gameplay is top tier. Its unit progression is still awful due to children being a forced mechanic that defeats the purpose of lategame recruits but at least they seemed to grow an understanding of the flaws of their system and made an effort to make a shitty mechanic less shit. I still think the focus is all wrong though, and the only design core philosophy shift I thought was positive was the understanding that FE simply doesn't work with grinding involved.

I still think the series is probably fucked and Conquest was a one time thing. I don't think for a second that they're going to keep making different versions every release, and they sure as hell won't scrap the Awakening/BR/Rev model and make CQ the norm. And making CQ the norm would really be the only way the future games could be redeemed. But FE is a general audience series now so it's Awakening/BR from here on out.

Though I will say that nothing in Fates was nearly as offensive as Awakening. Which is hilarious considering how the children who got upset about Fates are now claiming Awakening is the gold standard. I really want to get off this ride.

Grinding is lame in pretty much every form it was in, regardless of how much better the FE4 and BEXP system was. If they made it that BEXP was equivalent to money and necessary to make it past future obstacles rather than completely fucking superfluous than it would be great.

I have that same feeling too. Splitting the games wasn't that bad of an experiment (besides completely gutting the story and support combos). I feel like they need to split what made Fates good and what made Fates casual into two different series. Fan division be damned.

Awakening at the very least had a map to traverse and a localization that tried to mix old vernacular with contemporary mannerisms. I can replay Awakening, BR and RV are kind of a different story.

I didn't think I'd find someone on /vp/ of all places who actually recognizes why BEXP is such a good system. Resource management is what makes FE tick and BEXP is a damn near perfect system for the series formula. Unfortunately it doesn't extend play time to keep players mindlessly thumbing away so they see new paid DLC adverts so it won't come back. Also can we agree that even the arena is shit?

I can't replay Awakening. It's too fucking awful. I could replay BR before I could replay Awakening again. I know you might like the Awakening cast better but I couldn't stand them. At least in BR the joke character was Azama instead of literally the entire fucking army.

It's not -awful-, and other than MU every bit of new content makes it the type of remake I wish Game Freak would make, but it's really the beginning of the end. My Unit and the general design philosophy of adding casual mode were brought forward into Awakening and Fates. The only thing that kept FE12 from being a formless jelly blob of disappointment like Awakening was that it had FE3's content keeping it contained. MU, casual mode, and poor unit balance were moles on FE12's back but were terminal cancer in Awakening since the content of Awakening was designed around them.

It's still a decent game however. Better than Shadow Dragon. Still ugly as sin though.

Well it promotes playing the game well and in tune to how the protagonists would approach a situation, while substituting grinding. In theory it's a great system. And of couse the arena was bad. It was way too abusable and better left out rather than it being easily avoidable.

It helps that I found the dialogue rather funny in a lot of cases. And when the entire cast has a quirk it kinda changes my expectations. I know I'm not gonna get good character interactions everytime, but atleast it might be fun.

I needed to restrict myself a lot to enjoy Awakening. BR just can't do it for me. Even when using the shittiest characters, the game plays so slowly and easily and it doesn't have any upticks in interesting map design like some of Awakening, besides Mitama's map.

If you count Gunter and Jakob/Felicia as Corrin's retainers I think Gunter was great and Jakob was passable. Niles was also pretty good other than the fujobait aspects. Kaze also sort of becomes a retainer and he's pretty great. The Hoshidan retainers were generally good as well so I think they had it in the to make three more Nohrian characters that felt like they actually belonged.

My main problem with the Awakening pandering was that there could have been something better where those six characters were slotted in. I don't care about the BR children as much since the children are bland and worthless anyway but I think the Hoshidan retainers did a good job of making the royals feel more grounded. Saizo especially was phenomenal as a character but in his place we have dancy boy for a royal that should by all right be more serious in his retainer choices. Though given that Peri exists I think you have a good argument for why more original characters might have ended up just as bad as the Awakening trio.
