Because after GSC, the writers tried to be more ecumenical with their atmosphere, so there wasn't any of that Japanese cultural charm to it that Gen I and II had.
The first 2 gens were pretty empty, I'll admit that, but what was there was good because it was familiar for the writers. When they try to do generic-civilization #4128, it's kinda bland.

The games are so fucking transparent with you these days. They tell you exactly where you'll go and what you'll find before you're even allowed to take a step. And everything has a clear reason that's thrown right in your face, everything can be boiled down to either "This is ancient Pokemon magic!" or "This is cutting-edge technology!" instead of mysterious events that just exist and let you draw your own conclusions. There are no more secret little rituals like the Mt. Moon Clefairies or the Friday Lapras.

Only thing I can think of in the recent games that comes close would be the Lumiose Ghost Girl. But there's no adventure or special time or anything in order to get to that. No ritual.

I think the real problem is that background lore got replaced with overt lore. Instead of fleshing out the world with cool things relating to the location, all the lore is packed into the story and so anything not in the story ends up bland as hell
