I'm currently shiny hunting for a shiny bagon in Sun. Anyone know if closing the 3ds while in the battle will break the chain or not?

It's not.

Closing ds has never broken chain before, but to be safe, I would start an encounter and close it before you kill.
What
Why would that have any effect?
that has never been the case for any kind of chaining as far as i'm aware
The only game I'm aware of that even took the sleep mode into account at all for anything other than to pause the game was Zelda Spirit Tracks, and maybe Another Code and the Hotel Dusk-like games.
Just for clarity, the Pokémon calling a different species (i.e. Bagon calling for Salamence) doesn't break the chain, right?

That's the same species, anon.

It doesn't

so how do i chain efficiently?
They rarely call for backup even with adrenaline orb. Even if it does, poks doesnt always come.
Do individual poks have individual charisma points that decided whether or not it will get backup?

I think they only start calling for help once they're down to 50% health. Have you tried using something with Super Fang?

I actually hit the pokemon with a not effective move to get it down to yellow/possibly red.
Kept using adrenaline orb because the effect was already applied and didnt use up my moves/other items. It's just really irritating not seeing him get help once every ~8 turns.
I dont remember chaining being this time consuming.
I am clearly doing stuff wrong. Is there a pokemon move / ability that makes the target pokemon call help more frequently?

Both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks took it into account.
I believe a few other games have used it for puzzle solving too.
