It's been increased compared to every other first entry pair of games. Not sure if beats Platinum but it's a massive improvement over gen VI.

Yes. Nuzlockes will be brutal for the unprepared. What with Z-moves and totem pokemon gimmicks.

That said, it's still too easy. I'm over-leveled heading into the 3rd island. Here's hoping there's a spike.

But much better than Kalos. I never used EXP share and it was still entirely braindead.

If you don't, the game is pretty damn easy, but not braindead easy.
If you do, the scaling does wonders to keep you in your toes.
I can safely say that even with some grinding to search for specific mons and evolving this fucking golbat, wild mons are within 3 levels of you.

there's some fun totem pokemon but the buildup to them is even easier than gyms were since there's just 3 random encounters instead of trainers or actual puzzles
and some totems were lazy shit that just used their unevolved forms or had no synergy with the totem itself, and you can always cheese them by just ignoring the summon so they don't bring anything worse into battle
even on the last routes and the plot climax you'll still be facing trainers using just one weak pokemon, even baby pokemon

With EXP share off I ended up pretty underleveled for most of the game but because of the gen 5 exp mechanics grinding up to at least the levels of wild pokemon is pretty quick.

A good bit harder. I never lost but came real close when Totem Lurantis summoned a Sunny Day Castform to rape my Dartrix.

Also there were a few instances where you'd suddenly find yourself in a battle harder than the Championship with no warning; which was weird because like 90% of the major fights ask if you want to wait or not.

Red nearly fucked me over because I was expecting a pokecenter at the Battle Tree not the strongest trainer in the game with no option to hold off.

i actually didnt use any x items right up until i fought the E4. no exp share plus decent scaling and my own lack of wanting to grind. and i still lost sometimes because i would chose the wrong mon to set up on sometimes.

Yes, it's much more in line with the rest of the series. Unlike what most of /vp/ believes, EXP Share was never the main problem and was just a convenient scapegoat to deflect from the rest of gen 6's problems, S&M fixes most of them and is designed with the assumption that EXP Share will be on so you'll still find yourself having trouble with totems or being outleveled by story bosses even if you use it.

There's a fucking spike. I basically gave up my run.

Word for the warning, watch out for the ghost trial totem. That thing wiped my team and made me give up on my run. Also, everything after that point is a sudden spike in level if you haven't really went out of your way to grind or use EXP share.

The difficult and level curve are by and far the best in the series. The only one that comes close to difficulty is Platinum, but even with the exp share on the entire time I was about 2-3 levels below the E4.

Yeah it was fucked up. The fight right before it was a tag battle with two veterans with 3 Pokemon each which was already abnormal by trainer standards in the game.

well, I've been running around with the Exp Share off and not grinding and raising 10 pokes and I started to drift away from the average enemy level by the second island.
I'm like almost 8 levels below ya boi (his mons are like at 43) right now, he actually rekt me 2 times. I noticed I used way more items than I usually use, and been bailed out a couple of times by the amie boosts (I forgot you recieved boosts for petting the pokemon and now it's too late). Some totem fights are kind of a bitch too.
Using the same play style (no exp share, no grind and many mons at the time) in gen VI was way easier, so I'd say there's a big improvement

i'd say they're more challenging than XYORAS

but you know, it's still Pokemon. Too bad SM's pacing is sooo damn slow due to all the cutscenes.
