Characterization was pretty good but the story suffered from awful pacing and too much hand-holding so you don't miss the next chapter of Lillie'so story.

Hau's and Gladion's character development are one of my favorite things in the entire pokemon series. Both learn a bit from each other.
When you beat them as challengers to the champion title, Hau says he now understands that it takes a lot of courage to admit oneself is weak and Gladion says that by losing he can learn how to get stronger, and that he is glad he can train with the best.
