QR codes simply add to your Seen numbers, Pokémon you've already seen/caught can be used for it, though. The QR codes are mostly used for the Island Scan, though, where you can catch Pokémon that aren't native to Alola, such as starters (people have found Chikorita in Melemele, for example), that's what it's mostly used for.

Once you scan 10 of them you can use the 'Island Scan' once you do that you get the chance to encounter a 'rare' pokemon that is not normally found in Alola on the island you are currently are.
You have one hour to find it and it tells you in what exact area it is. Once you catch it it's gone.

How does this shit work for dummies:

>You get 10 scans every day. You can scan pokemons you already have in the dex, hell you can even scan your own pokemons
>Once you reach 100 scan points, you can spend it on a "island scan"
>Every day the game rolls 4 pokemons out of the 20, one for each island
>You can save before scanning. Don't like the scan result? Just reload and scan another island. All 4 islands suck? Wait the next day.
