Just look at Jirachi, Celebi, and Manaphy. It fits right in with them aesthetically.

Nah, this one is definitely a step back. I've never been a huge fan of those Pokemon to start with, but I've never distinctly thought they looked like shit until now.

Pixie-mons traditionally have bit heads, stout bodies, and stumpy arms/legs. They also throw in a reference or two to compliment their typing (Celebi's head looks like a seed, Manaphy's head looks like a rain drop, Jirachi...well I don't know how Jirachi represents steel...). Marshadow is a Ghost type, so it's black (like a shadow) and has pillow tufts (to insinuate its ethereal nature).

I have no clue how you're considering this a step back...like at all. The only thing I can do is say "different strokes for different folks". Either that or you're just trying to purposely be a contrarian.
