This is one of the biggest fuckups for me. Gladion should have been fleshed out WAY more. His potential as a rival was definitely there. I liked the disparity between Hau and Gladion and I thought their interaction between each other was well done. If we got less Hau cutscenes and more Gladion/Gladion-Hau scenes, the writing would have ramped up a bit for me.

They should have explored Lillie and Gladion's relationship a bit more. If it wasn't for Gladion helping you save Lillie and going angsty when Lillie willingly goes with Lusamine to protect him you would think he doesn't care for her at all.

I definitely agree here. In all honestly, while I've seen many people praising the characterization this gen, it was a Naruto-esque rushjob. Gladion and Guzma were likeable, but weren't interacted with enough to allow for some attachment. I feel more attachment to the "Nyuck-nyuck" Rocket Grunt than to Guzma.

No, they definitely need to rethink their story distribution. There's nothing wrong with characterization and development, but the game wastes massive amounts of screentime for dead end hijinks or to give you directions(which always amount to "keep going straight")

I have no problem listening to the nicer characters like the Captains or the Lusamine family, but it needs to be broken up more so I can have some peace and quiet to catch pokemon and fight trainers. Short routes combined with cutscenes at the beginning of each one really fuck up the flow.

I'm not going to say it's a good thing, but another character being the focus of most JRPGs with an unvoiced blank-template character is kinda the standard. The protag in Digimon Cyber Sleuth is pretty essential to the story but it's still Arata, Nokia and Yuuki who get the most to do in cutscenes.
