You just have to have a favorite pokémon that's all, the best place to see pokémon in action is the cartoon!

If you have a 3DS then get S/M, that's what everyone will be playing online and stuff

If not then just emulate the best games of each gen. Firered/Leafgreen are remakes of the originals so that's a decent start
