Then again that's some Blue-level shit so maybe it's the one that has the type disadvantage. Or maybe the one that matches your starter.

Or maybe it's random every time.

Or maybe Gamefreak said "lol they think his mega is gonna be either Charizard or Venasaur"

Also, incase no one realized this, he only has three pokemon. Maybe this is old news, but I've seen a lot of people talking about how they hope his team is "blah blah blah" and they name six. I haven't played it but I'd be willing to guess the whole battle tree is restricted to three pokemon. I don't see why they would give him three when others have more.

Red and Blue can be fought outside of the Battle Tree and have 6. We've known about this since their reveal.

Red has his HGSS team again. Blue has Alakazam, Machamp, Gyarados, Exeggutor, Arcanine, and something else (not Pidgeot).

All the trainers have a pool of Pokemon they draw their team from.
In this instance, Blastoise, Lapras, and Charizard were randomly chosen.

Now, NPC trainers are programmed to always Mega Evolve their Pokemon if they can; so if they had two Pokemon holding Mega Stones, they'd always Mega Evolve the first one sent out. This can be seen in Secret Base Trainers in ORAS.

It's likely that all of Red's starters have Mega Stones; it's just that in this instance, Blastoise was first out, so Blastoise was Mega Evolved.

The Battle Tree is 100% random

People dont even always lead with their ace this time. Red can probably mega evolve all 3 starters

It's probably like PWT where important characters have multiple sets they randomly use.

I really want to knoww what Pokemon do Cynthia, Grimsley, Colress etc. use.

I gotta say, this is a surprisingly neutral/fair move for GameFreak.

I wouldn't have put it past them to go with the "Red's Mega/Ace/favorite/canon starter is EVERYONE's favorite starter: Charizard!"
