Mechanically, what's the point of baby Pokemon? Do they

I think babies are the only way to get certain mons yeah. Seems to be a dead system noe though. No idea why Riolu is a baby though.

Some of them have useful moves that their evos don't get. Encore from Wynaut, Fake out from Tyrogue, Nasty plot from Pichu and Riolu.

Not only do they piss off dexfags, they piss off people in general because they have some of the worst stats, most evolve based on happiness, and most stop learning moves period around 15 or so.
Which basically equates to running in circles for over ten hours because happiness isn't a fucking stat you can max at the start of the game without lugging around a level 26 Pichu.

They only exist because they're cute and marketable

they were some dumb attempt to create 'cute babymon' designs to try to capture the girl demographic

seriously they tried to make these things popular and they were not well received

this was before they realized they could design powerful pokemon that would also appeal to girls and women without having to make them a bunch of useless fucking babies
