I was actually approaching the argument from the angle of how mindless the story progression is and how it tells you exactly where to go next, not the fact that all these games have a ghost guide in common. It actually didn't occur to me until you mentioned it because I played Yokai Watch only once, and I forgot that the ghost butler yokai existed to begin with.

I'm sorry but Yo-Kai Watch is not a "competitor". It's with Digimon as an, albeit less edgy, alternative. Before anyone asks, I've played the first one for a little while and I thought it waa charming but the monster designs don't really do it for me. A lot of them are recolors and I have no idea why they gave Jibanyan so many forms. Is he supposed to be like Eevee? It has the most punchable face ever too.
