There are Gyms but they aren't mandatory and they're basically just rematches with the Trial Captains after you finish the game. There is a League, they complete it after the credits roll after you defeat Lusamine. It has an E4 and a Champion, the Champion is Kukui (who became a Champion in Kanto).

Zygarde getting a brief appaearance in the anime or warping Greninja over doesn't need to be a big event. It'll be like Charizard's return in BW.

Starter pokemon also always return to Ash, especially the popular and marketable ones. Greninja isn't just some random pokemon like Primeape or Pidgeot, its literally one of his most popular and important pokemon, especially with todays kids, and just recently left. Greninja is the Charizard to today's kids.

Of all the pokemon Ash released only 4 of them never really returned, so I don't see why you guys don't think it will happen.

There's very few episodes after 51 that aren't at least "very good".

I have to agree the beginning of XY was quite slow looking back on it now. Since Serena didn't do much and Ash only had like two pokemon, most of the enjoyment came from Bonnie/Clemont. There were also no rivals in the series for quite some time.

There's a few things that XY&Z did that are unforgivable, but the only thing XY did that was unforgivable was making Serena useless for so long. In a four year series, sure, but in a three year series that much wasted time on a maun character quest is inexcusable.

XY being only 3 years probably helped it. It forced the writers to make less filler and focus on developing the group and their pokemon faster, and more focus on the big plots.
