So how does the shields up work? I know it isn't a free hit like mimikyu's decoy but does it have higher defenses when in the armor or are the stats the same in both forms?

Pretty sure it doesnt make it a big deal if it has shit stats to begin with. And probably base 40/50 hp which is a bigger shit.
