They were also fun as hell to encounter for the first time. You'll be minding your own business and all of a sudden a legendary beast is in front of you.
Suicune was my favorite. I was able to SR for a shiny one in Soul Silver (only took like 20 resets).

I always thought of darkrai as a sad, cursed existence. It can't help it's nightmare causing abilities from spreading so it secludes itself in a far away island in lonliness so that it doesn't cause trouble. Seems sad to me man, I dunno. Just never thought of darkrai as the "edgy" type.
Of course, I'm only thinking about the mainline game canon. Dunno about the other ones and how he's portrayed in those.

Easily Deoxys. Unique, mysterious, interesting, and its different forms means it has something for everybody.
Attack Forme: Awesome design and is the non-Mega Evolved Pokémon with the highest Attack and Special Attack stat.
You either kill it immediately or have most of your Pokemon THKO'd at best.
This Pokemon also has different learned moves on level-up depending on what forme it is.
I also like how Deoxys is somehow more unsettling than most Ghost types even though it's Psychic.
It's also one of the few if not only Pokemon to have its body parts blown off in battle, ever.

Deoxys was always my favorite mythical Pokemon. IMO the best Psychic legendary and arguably the scariest. At least with Mewtwo you understood the Pokemon's motivations, with Deoxys it is just coming down to wreck your shit and the only way to stop it is to wreck it back.
Plus it's a fucking alien!

But notice how it never starts the battles it somehow gets itself into. Rayquaza/Mega Rayquaza attacked it first in Destiny Deoxys and Generations. It really just defends itself when attacked.
