The Mega Evolution specials and the whole Zygarde/Alain/Flare arc in the XY&Z season is the closest the Pokémon Anime has ever been to a great quality production with compelling and amazing story telling.

Unfortunately, with SM appearing to be school life comedy skits ft. Ash and the pokeymans, I don't think we'll be seeing more of that for some time. Well, let's wait and see.

Well it did used to have strong continuity in the OS, AG and DP era's.

Why do you think Ash starting fresh in AG didn't matter? Its because Ash became a more experienced trainer that saga, acted as a mentor to May, and evolved most of his Pokemon.

Why do you think DP felt like the pinnacle of the anime at the time? Its because everything from OS and AG felt like it still mattered and brought Ash to this point.

Its only now with BW, XY and SM the anime feels more standalone each saga with the exception of a few minor things.
