I don't remember 80% of the episodes in detail (though if I watch an episode list on say bulbapedia I remember the gist of them) and it was quite painful at times, especially around mid Johto and a lot of AG, which felt like it was much too long and boring. Aside from OS and XY obviously, DP was by far the most enjoyable part of the whole thing.

At least now I know how he got every badge, how he did in every league, and how he, as well as every other character met their Pokémon, and how they released some of them. I guess it was sort of worth it.

Sceptile, Corphish and Snorunt/Glalie were all great, and back then Swellow was Ash's first bird used for battling so it stood out. Although not so much anymore now that Ash has so many bird pokemon.

TR/Brock are far less bland in AG then they become in DP and beyond, and May/the Contests were the major well developed part of the saga. The battles were also a step up from the OS at least.

At this rate we might be waiting a long time for the last episode of the anime and I see no reason from a marketing perspective for the writers to bring back Serena for more than a one- or two-episode cameo in S/M.

I sort of think that the writers are trying to thread the needle in such a way that Amourshippers get something nice and can plausibly claim it as canon, while having just enough ambiguity for non-Amourshippers to say it's not canon.

I do sort of fear that Serena's fate will ultimately be no different than that of the other girls: tossed into the wastebasket just like the other girls have been. And that to me diminishes the significance of the kiss. In the grand scheme of things, how much does a goodbye kiss really matter?

Yet Serena saying Ash will be hers would seemingly suggest that the writers ultimately want Amour to be canon. Maybe they do want it to be canon but couldn't show them married and such because this is a kids show and Ash is likely to remain 10 for the show's duration. So their only workaround was to have Serena say on camera she's going to end up with the Ash someday.

In all fairness, we do not know. Seeing as the anime is basically a promotion tool for the vidya, and these will continue pouring out until GF and TPC go bust, we won't see Ash's story ending in a long time; maybe we're not even at the half-point at all (even though 20 years have passed already). And if/when that day happens, they can do whenever they can: maybe they give him an open ending where he fucks off to another adventure, maybe he loses for the gorillionth time and choses another career path, maybe he wins a league, maybe they age him up and show him married and with a kid. And in that scenario, there are several possibilities: bringing an old girl, using the current (last) girl as wife, asspulling an OC girl out of their asses, not showing the wife altogether...who the fuck knows. The only thing we can be sure is that, right now, Serena has the highest chance (which is still a small chance) to be endgame, maybe, and if there is an endgame at all.

And all of this is assuming they don't simply give the anime the axe at the middle of a series and leave it inconcluse.
