How the FUG many RS can I trade away a Giratina-EX for right now, it feels like I've tried everything

Semi-related, but does 60 SS for a Shaymaymay-EX seem overpriced in today's economy? Evolutions has thrown everything off

I'm not sure there's a reason to play this over Energy Retrieval. Vileplume blocks Retrieval, but Garb blocks Starmie and is way more commonly played.

It's not like you can even play both. There really isn't space in a Volcanion decklist for more than a 1-1 line of Starmie, and that really isn't a reliable option.

I'm not sure it qualifies as a meme deck, but I just don't think it will be as good as a regular Volcanion build. In Energy Retrieval/Fisherman (+ VS Seeker)/Super Rod, Volcanion has enough ways to recycle energy without having to rely on Stage 1 Lysandre bait.

I get the feeling that Starmie/Volcanion is one of those combinations that looks good on paper, but will actually turn out to be really inconsistent when put into practice.

They mostly tried to compensate for power creep by just upping the numbers on the cards. Some cards are actually worse than base set though.

Dragonite-EX is about the only 'good' card from the set, but that will just be used to help stuff like M Ray/M Garde refill their bench more easily.

Depends on the simplicity of the deck. I've seen decks ran 100 times all the same way, but 1 more effective deck with just a couple of different cards.

99% sure my opponent was expecting to get the KO as soon as Yveltal became active. I think he just got a bit greedy and wasn't thinking when he played the Silent Lab.

Nothing else on my bench was powered up, so it would have been really tough to take the final prize the following turn if Volcanion-EX had dropped. I was running low on resources and had he played the Silent Lab one turn later I'd have been reliant on a very favourable top-deck.

The stadium was a huge misplay. As for the Shaymin, he didn't really have a lot of choice otherwise, so I wouldn't consider that a misplay really.

Greninja is a top deck in expanded, probably top 3 or top 5 minimum due to it not giving a fuck about item lock and such.

In standard it's a dead deck but assuming Japan isn't retarded when the Giratina is released west side then that card is going to be a 1 or 2 in any deck that has trouble against Greninja. Probably Viplume Box.

I was judging at a League tournament recently and had a query about this card, which I've never seen played in person and very rarely online.

The player used Drag Off when their opponent had no benched Pokémon. I ruled that the 50 damage would be dealt to the current active Pokémon.
Both players accepted the answer, and it was just a free tournament with no prize so there wasn't any consequences, but for future reference, was this correct?

Get powerful things up faster than your opponent. A lot of games end up in a situation where both players just have a series of Pokémon that can all OHKO each other. In that situation, you want to get started first.

Somewhere in between. There are few cards that have literally no niche, but 90% of tournaments will still end up being won by a small number of common deck archetypes. There are different ways of running each deck, though.

Building decks gets pretty complicated if you're competing at the top level. But for casual play it's not too hard. There's a baseline 22 cards that you can put into practically every single deck you make right now:
4x Sycamore
2x N
2x Lysandre
4x VS Seeker
4x Trainers' Mail
4x Ultra Ball
2x Shaymin
Then just throw in some stadiums that are relevant to you, some tools that you think will help you, a couple of other trainers that synergize with your strategy, energy, and of course the Pokemon.

Standard is pretty rigid compared to Expanded, which is practically the wild west at this point. That's to be expected of Standard at this point since we've only had one (bad) set since the rotation. It'll likely open up more in the next couple of sets unless Pokemon fucks up and creates another Toad/Night March/Virgen. That's all for real life, though. You can build practically anything online and win with it.

There's no secret. You maximize the cards you can use the most often so your hands are rarely dead.

Energy has a strict OPT attach clause (outside of certain abilities that remove it) so you never want more than one in your hand per turn. Basic Pokemon are only dead if your field is full, but non-Basic Pokemon are dead in your hand since you have to wait a turn to evolve (again, barring other card effects). And it's not like having a hand full of Pokemon that I can fill my bench with advances my game state dramatically. And Supporters and Stadiums are also OPT meaning you'll never want multiples of each. Which just leaves Items, which are generally always playable. And items are what help you advance your game state the most, whether your win-con is lockdown or aggro.

So deck construction reflects these facts. Items are the most usable, so they make up a majority of the deck. Pokemon come next, because they are necessary to win, but we don't want too many of them. And Supporters, Stadiums and Energy all have OPT clauses, so we want to run as few of them as possible to avoid clogging hands, while not also affecting our consistency.

I wouldn't say "anything is viable" but it's not a meta or die game. Anti-meta decks can be very strong and do very well at high levels. No one saw Gyarados coming at the last regionals, and Glaceon EX/Jolteon EX/Regice went under-hyped. But both decks did well because they were fine-tuned to beat the meta (Volcanion EX, M Mewtwo EX, etc).

For beginners though, it's best to stick to meta decks that you can find lists for online and start from there until your comfortable enough with your skill level to start building anti-meta, rogue or casual decks. PTCGO is better for casual playing.

The one thing you do NOT want to do is spam a bunch of matches with a Tier 1 deck then try using a Tier 3 or lower deck, unless you're prepared to spend either 30 minutes forfeiting every match or want to have awfully boring defeat after defeat matches.

You don't really pick your favorite Pokemon and start there. You have to look up specific cards and see what synergy they have with other cards, usually of the same type.

I'm not as experienced as some other players here, but I'm not sure Latios is particularly great. Regular Latios EX has a cool thing of attacking turn 1 but in the scale of things it's not great. Its second attack is decent damage but you really, really need Double Dragon energy for it. Without DD, it'll take so long to set up that your opponent will have a full bench of Megas set up.
Mega Latios EX also seems one of the less useful ones, however 120 benched damage can be okay given how prominent Shaymin EX and Manaphy EX are. Run N and Captivating Poképuffs to get the maximum effect from it.

Is it worth to buy cards just to collect them? I don't mind the TCG, but the art on some cards is too good

Since no one's answering this with concrete evidence, here's a summary of the 2015-2016 Standard format. Pokemon's rotation happens September 1st every year. It's worth noting that these lists are sorted by meta share and not victories, and are only for Masters Division. For example, M Audino is the deck that won Worlds despite having half the meta share of the most popular deck.

Notice that even though Night March was the most predominant deck of the format, it didn't start off particularly strong and petered out a bit towards Worlds. Despite having a near-40% meta share in its prime, its win rate didn't entirely match that and it failed to perform at the most premier event of the year.

But these results are exclusively for major events. PTCGO is a much more casual environment where most players play and build sub-optimally thanks to the paywall, giving much more leniency using building off-meta decks.

Here's a list I put together just for you. The deck isn't good at all, and I'm sure it could be built better, but it's usable and a starting point. Use Clawitzer to set up, snipe Shaymins, Lysandre/Rope away threats, 2HKO their bench. If anyone wants to drop some knowledge on a better build, feel free to correct me.

If you don't want to use M Latios, base Latios EX can win on the first turn against certain decks thanks to its attack, but the meta's shifted away from that being viable.

Also, the poster you're replying to got a bit overzealous with what he's saying. Trainers Mail isn't a staple, you can cut down on Lysandres or Ns and still be fine, and Expanded is a much, much more punishing format with a more concise meta than Standard.

Last format had Muscle Band. More importantly, you had FF Forretress with Forest of Giant Plants to give you +10 each, then Devolution Spray/Scoop Up/AZ to abuse that. Throw in Puzzle of Time and you have a potential cap of 220 damage.

In order to do all that, you build a deck with maxed Shaymin, Acro Bike, Roller Skates, and anything else to turbo for that first turn kill.

Don't forget some of the best decks of the format included Night March, Trevenant, Vespiquen, Greninja, and Yveltal/Zoroark, all of which need very little damage to actually donk, so it's not like you had to actually use all the tools.

The deck is still playable in Expanded and you can even throw in Laserbank for +10/30 or Scoop Up Cyclone. But there were a lot of issues, such as having to autoscoop against most EX deck unless you open nuts, going second and having your opponent play bench, and so on. I'd sooner bank on M Latios in Standard than an outdated gimmick deck.

The list I made was a rough sketch of any deck. Those 22 should be considered at those numbers unless you're playing something unusual. From there you can fine tune how many Lysandres, Ns, Sycamores, Shaymins, or Trainers' Mail.

As for the expanded meta, you'll have to show me where you're getting your results. Because in Pheonix there were 16 different decks in the top 32, whereas there were only 11 in Orlando.

Well you're in luck, expanded has battle compressor which puts a bunch of shit from your deck into your discard. Which can then be pulled out for use with VS Seeker.


A competitive complete expanded deck?
At least 100 dollars, the shaymins alone needed for almost every deck run for like 40 dollars each and you need two. Then you need your actual pokemon which depending on the deck for anywhere from 2-8 dollars depending on the card. The same with the trainer cards.
Energies are basically free shit, people at local leagues will give them away.

Start with the online version for a while and get a feel for the game is my best opinion.
