The Japanese are notorious confabulators; they essentially come up with stories to explain their past actions that are in no way actually connected to a real continued thread of reasoning. If you were to ask a japanese person why they did something, and then presented them with evidence that makes their explanation seem impossible, rather than actually scrutinizing the information they just stare at you blankly because, unlike other humans, they genuinely don't understand how different ideas can effect each other. This is why they're so predisposed to horrible war crimes; they fight according to their basest, most brutal instincts and then come up with justifications later. There's been research on this; 95.7% of Japanese citizens literally can't pass the Turing Test.

This is why Japanese companies give out these bullshit nonsense reasonings for their actions, because they literally base their actions on nothing and construct a story around it later. The REAL reason the gender ratio for starters is mostly male is because they're horribly sexist and think of their coolest strongest heroes as male by default. But they made Primarina the way it is because they think mermaid animal people are sexy and they want to mastrubate to it. And the fact that these ideas they've presented are in direct conflict mean nothing to them, because the Japanese mind is incapable of rational thought or contradiction recognition.

Good thing I let all the remnants of my hate about it out before they were announced, otherwise, by the time I would have found out about them, I wouldn't be able to discuss what exactly made me dislike it because everyone already made a thousand squads to defend each design by that point and I wouldn't be able to have a calm proper discussion on what exactly l like and dislike about them without someone going "b-but it's perfect gtfo no flaws".

When starters are likely fake everyone goes "Gamefreak would never do something as cool or innovative as this" and when signs start pointing to them being real more and more vocal people who dislike them come out of the woodwork and try to tell you why you shouldn't. Go back and see early threads and the general mood and compare it to today, where there are several threads with people trying to say "X is the worst starter of all time" or "you have shit taste if you think these are good."

Looking at the Water starter, its kind of funny to point out the following. While a lot of people dislike Primarina, that is overall speaking in terms of polls and what not, its still the one Alolan Starter that is the most accurate when concerning the type of species they used to create it. Primarina still, at its core, looks like a legitmate seal hands down, only with longer flipper-hands, a stylish hairdo, and a long fish-like tail that ends exactly like a pair of hind flippers possessed by real seals.

It doesn't actually evolve from a seal into something entirely super different, and due to its design, actually strikes a good balance between being a actual seal, and a humanoid-like one finished with elements of a mermaid.

It actually looks very elegantly, if not brillantly designed in that case. For all we know, it could have evolved from a seal into something super random, like a octopus. dolphin, or a sea-serpent. (See Samurott)

It's a decidedly feminine looking pokemon, even despite the chances of it being female only 12.5%. There are also claims that the design is bad, BUT NO ONE HAS ACTUALLY ARTICULATED THEIR FUCKING THOUGHTS ON THAT PROPERLY, so of course I have yet to hear anyone give a valid reason for disliking it's 'bad design'.

It is also disliked because often times fanmade pokemon are more appealing in terms of design, and even creates a bias for that design, making the alternatives that are presented to them as the "defacto" iteration a falsehood or a sham.

Honestly what really triggers me the most about when someone complains about the aesthetic of a design is either when they are blaming something else entirely unrelated to aesthetic as the reason for disliking it (" I hate it because I know furries will like it"), OR they dislike it because they claim the design is bad, but 1. don't give any reasons or 2.their reasons don't actually explain anything and 3. they don't accept that dislike for the design is to some margin subjective (meaning based on ones own interpreted sensibilities versuse anything that can be considered 'fact')

I honestly truly do not understand why people think like this. Do you realize how self absorbed that makes you? There are plenty of Pokemon I don't really care for, many of which are some peoples favorites, but I would never want them not to exist. I want there to be many drastically different designs because you can pick anything you want across all generations. You do not have to like every Pokemon and they are not intended to be that way. You're supposed to have ones that you like over another but that doesn't mean everyone is going to have those as their favorites. It's the main reason I even enjoy this franchise so much and its a shame that almost every Generation we largely focus on what does not appeal to us as a board.
