What you're failing to remember is that Aerodactyl lacks a solid Flying type move, which hurts it because Flying is a fantastic offensive type. There's also the fact that it Shields Down blocks status, so you don't have to worry about walls burning you, paralyzing you, or forcing you out with sleep or toxic, something no other setup sweeper can offer aside from orb users. Substitute is just there to ensure activating Shields Down with as much HP as possible. With the Shell Smash + Shields Down boost, Minior is hitting AT LEAST +3 Speed and +3 Attack, maybe even +4 depending on the specifics of Shields Down. That's insanely scary boosting with very, very little risk.

no one is going to let you sit there for 3 whole turns without an attempted setup.
Also, why not smash first, then sub until you're under 50; unless you're threatened to be one-two hit ko'd?

It still gets Power Gem, it might get Earth Power and/or Air Slash so it wouldnt be all that bad.

Substitute on Minior is only useful for lowering your own HP. When Minior has 100%-51% HP, it is automatically immune to all status effects.

We're are solely lacking in pokemon from the stratosphere. A lot of neat middle areas get ignored. It's amazing to think these things just float up there until they gather enough detritus and fall down to the Earth when they get too heavy.
