It starts with people being pissed off that Ash didn't hook up with Dawn....

People who care about the love lives of cartoon characters, these are called "shippers".

By the time the XY anime had came around. Fans were sick of Ash losing the Pokemon League tournaments, and never hooking up with his female companions.

The creators caved and lazily shoe-horned a romantic interest for Ash who blatantly loved him from the start with no build up. Her name was Serena.

Throughout the series, the XY anime turn out to be one of the better seasons of Pokemon, Ash showed real growth as a trainer and character. By this point, the people who wanted Ash to get with Serena had grown immensely, and people began to talk about her and Ash had gotten a little out of control as if that was all they cared about. This ship became known as "Amourshipping" and fans of Serena had become known as "Serenafags" by the people who were sick of the threads being 70% Serena or shipping posts. That and it became apparent that a moderator who watches over these threads was also a Serenafag, and would delete anti-Serena posts.

By the end of the series, Ash had lost yet again and people were PISSED. It devolved into a shit posting nightmare. It wasn't helped by the fact that the Sun/Moon anime was announced around the same time and fans hated the artstyle as well as Serenafags getting assblasted over the thought of her not going with Ash to Alola. Not that this was any different then when he previously left for a new region.

Why are people assuming that the director's word is law even after he's done with the show? The next director could very easily just say Serena died on the way to Hoenn, or Ash suffers from amnesia and forgot Kalos, or just hook him up with another girl. How are people not getting this?

Even though Serena failed to dance with Ash in this episode, it was refreshing to see Millefeui's interaction with Ash. It was nice seeing her play around.

Why the fuck do people invest themselves in ships other than Amour or Poke? Like, it makes sense to care about whether Amour or Poke happen or are handled well, since the first one is an explicit subplot and the second one was inserted in the 4Kids dub and people grew up with that. It is like caring whether he wins the league or not, it is a plot point the audience is supposed to be invested in (though not the extent some do).

But shipping Ash with Dawn or May or the squid without anything at all suggesting that? That is just autistic.

Pretty much if the last trailer we get for SM is about Contests and dressing your Pokémon up, it'll basically confirm Serena coming to Alola. Now, obviously Serena won't return in like the first 10 episodes or even 30. I like to assume that after the first season of Sun and Moon, Ash departs from the School, Ash gets told to go to the nearest boat dock only to find Serena waving and saying "Satoshi! I've finally returned!", he goes on a journey to the trial captains, defeats them, finds out about a construction on a Pokémon League, says he'll be master, Serena wins contests' (if confirmed), Ash wins League, defeats Kahuna's (E4).

All Speculation... also, we should expect a lot of old cast meme era to return in either flashbacks or in person, if the game is doing it.. so will the anime. Just like BW Decolora Islands ED credits in Japan shows every main cast member from 1997-2013.
