Or, go back to route 1, catch a basic and release everything else. No catching other Pokemon on any other route previously used, so you'll have to carefully grind up your rattata until you can start catching monsters on new routes:

This. Most of my runs start out as Nuzlockes but after the eventual wipe I just keep playing through because I'm still having fun.

If you really want to continue, you can make your own rules to help you. Only autists care about people sticking to basic nuzlocke rules. You can make it as hardcore or casual as you want or even abandon the nuzlocke completely.

Also here is a good rule to use: If you lost everything, including in the PC box, you can catch a single pokemon on the route you died at. If you died in a gym/city, you can catch up to as many pokemon as the routes next to it.

Adding rules all over the place mid game is bad, but I'm just suggesting a simple back up rule for his situation and future runs. I use the same rule as I only care about being forced to use new pokemon I normally would never touch and can't stand starting over.

Personal opinion, I think that's a bad rule. I think Nuzlocke runs are exciting because there's a risk you actually lose everything and have to start all over (altough the chance becomes less and less relevant as you pile up shit into the box).

it is a fail safe, but I do it because I care about keeping the "working with what I got" feeling going. I have zero desire to start over or continue a normal run once I started. There is nothing wrong with making a slightly more casual nuzlocke.

Keep playing, always remembering that you failed and the entire game from that point on is tarnished. Every captured pokemon, every victory, every item, every badge, every dollar, ALL tarnished. While you're at it ruminate on the fact that you are a useless human being because you cant even abide by rules you yourself imposed on YOURSELF.
