We finally got an official Pokemon fighting game.
The characters all have a ton of charm.
The visuals are pleasing.
The music is great.
The online is very solid.
It sold very well.

And ~NOBODY~ fucking cares. Everyone was done with it after like a week and now nobody cares anymore.

I'm a huge Pokken fan, my buds and I play all the time, but Luchachu is absolute fucking cancer and the roster just got stale really fast.

I think the addition of these last four Pokémon is gonna save the game, at least among my group of friends. Darkrai is meh but Scizor got EVERYONE hype, I expect when the DLC drops we'll all get super back into it. Here's hoping the mystery last slot doesn't go to some bullshit like Greninja or Incineroar.

my big issue is the roster balance and general gameplay
-ranged characters are highly oppressive
-windows of opportunity to punish people that spam counter moves is too small
-ranged grabs are pure cancer inducing
-the 2D fight mode doesn't fit; it should be free 3D movement as it is now until a knockdown and then it swaps into classic Tekken or Soul Calibur combat where the screen moves in closer like a 2D fighter but you have the option to sidestep attacks thus shifting the camera

I like the accessibility and how combos work; the idea of two styles of combat is neat but the execution needs work to better balance between characters with ranged options and the ones without. Also Shadow Mewtwo and Lucha Pikachu were bad ideas and should honestly be removed.

I agree with all of this but your last bullet point. I really enjoy the field/duel phase aspect of Pokken and I think it works rather well. Everything else you said is what needs to change, ESPECIALLY wasting roster space on the same genwunmon twice.

I honestly think Pokken would have seen twice the sales if they simply would have put Scizor instead of Luchachu in the first place. At least Shadowtwo is mildly acceptable and even should have been expected because its a Tekken crossover.

I just wanna side-step in duel phase
there was one online match as Weavile that left an awful after-taste
I had the match won vs a Braixen player; they were pushed to the wall with 1 hit to go. And they just sat there pressing the counter-attack button; you can't jump over it, you can't be anywhere near or you get hit, I stayed outside range waited for the animation to end then used Weavile's night slash and I still got beat over and over because the counter-attack animation has basically 0 recovery frames and the attack radius is huge.
In retrospect I had options to use there that I didn't try but I still think that's a major design flaw. Also it should be more clear when your opponent is charging a counter attack or a regular attack. In Smash you can tell whenever the opponent presses a counter button, also none of the counter skills in Smash do damage unless you attack first.
