The XY dub is literally unwatchable. Clemont is more wooden than General Sherman, Serena's voice isn't any better, Bonnie's acting is OK but the voice doesn't fit and Ash is worse than he's ever been. Apparently removing the OST and replacing it with your own is cheaper than you know, just licensing the OST for use in your dub. Many localizers know this but still choose to license because they don't want to literally bend the consumer over and fuck them in the ass, the assumption being that the profits from the product will cover the cost of licensing.

Which then has to make you wonder: Is the dub even profitable? It's not like you have to pay to watch it.

What he means is that a large 99% majority of English dubs nowadays keep the OST, including Japanese OP/ED. When broadcast on say, Toonami, they're shortened to 30 second versions, but that's American TV for you.

A notable exception is Dragon Ball Z Kai, where they got the dub cast to indeed, as you said, do the OP vocals in English. Either because it's a timeless show and it gets a free pass or because it originally aired on Nicktoons and their viewers are kids who don't want to hear nippon.
