Consider each Island as an entire living thing in it's own right. A lifeform. Now, you have a bunch of Pokemon and Humans living on said island.

The Guardians job is not to protect the Pokemon and Humans, it's to protect the island.

Human start fighting too much and damaging the environment? Fucking force them to fight to self destruction.

I'm loving these things. They made terrains viable, tapu koko crashing down in a bolt of lighting to fight the UB's, Lele having the power to give people cancer/ force them into a frenzy, Bulu swinging around trees as weapons, and the whole kinda overplayed mystic fog thing is pretty cool albeit overplayed.
Props for making them kinda assholish. Hawaiian gods could go full Greek mode in myths, especially Pele and a couple of the minor ones. Then again Pele is also the most well known/ cool one, so I could be missing things.

Those same mythologies had evil deities too. Just look at Apep. Plus most pantheons were more likely to stay out of mortal affairs and fuck with each other instead. Set was a pretty cool guy, helping Ra not get eaten by Apep, but he just straight up fucking murders Osiris.

Mot gets fucking annihilated and fed to birds, but comes back seven years later and says shit won't be square unless he gets to eat one of Ba'al's brothers.
