Passive abilities that effect the whole party would be an interesting way to make certain shitmons less of shitmons while still giving them mediocre stats. I'd be okay with seeing something like that, honestly.

The problem with that is that some of them are just localizations. Still works for some like Secret Power, Nature Power, and Ancientpower. Also, since it's gimmick is now super outdated so give it a new gimmickEach different unown form can learn a different signature move. Like Unown A gets Spacial Rend, Unown B gets Mat Block, Unown C gets Judgement, Unown D gets Kings Shield, etc.

i wouldn't mind a little more thought put into it, treating the unown like runes in d2 and certain combinations do different things.
so the strongest effect comes from having 6 unown spelling a word whilst combining 2 unown will result in a different effect.

I agree for the most part. Basically, I think Unown should work like Slivers in Magic do.
Each form gets a unique ability, and every Unown benefits from ALL abilities of Unown in the party. Each form should also have a different spread of base stats.
Also give them a signature move at level 50ish that is similar to Beat Up, but uses each pokemons Hidden Power typing on static attack value, instead of untyped with a flexible attack value.

It certainly fits in with the flavor of the Pokemon.
Unown needs an additional gimmick. Something to justify its existence other than "it can use choice items and maybe revenge-kill while levitating."
