In every game since HGSS, the apricorn balls and sport ball are just placeholder items that you can't even use.
In SM, not only are they usable, they have unique catching animations.
Note that sport balls did NOT get any of that, confirming it was a specific action towards the apricorn balls and not just filling in placeholders.
