Pets or friends depending on the pokemon.
N has the right idea.
Compatriots in combat and companions outside of it.
I really liked contests since it let me train Pokemon for more than just battles, and then earn them nice things like ribbons.
Thanks to XYORAS' updated breeding and return of contests, I can breed up a competitive Pokemon in a nice Pokeball and give it a pretty ribbon that shows how cool, tough, cute, clever, or beautiful it is.
I think of them as partners in crime
