Gyms were getting old anyway. The gym puzzles were beyond easy and the battles never posed an actual challenge.

The most fun I ever had in a pokemon game was coloseum. Change is good. If you want gyms there's like 10+ games that exist already to do just that.

For once I'm excited about change in Pokemon. Not because I have faith it will get better, but because the transition to 3D did not suit the old formula well at all.

Trials are literally just gyms with a different name and act more like traditional ROG bosses. I do hope one day we have a non-linear progression system where you choose which gym/trail you do first and have them change levels/teams up depending on if you choose it 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ect.

Just because it was a poorly executed concept as of late doesn't mean it had to be scrapped. Plus it's not a change for the better as the totem battles and trials that serve as a replacement do not provide any distinction in terms of enjoyment compared to just any regular battle.

I don't think it will be as bad as XY or ORAS. I'm fairly optimistic from the demo that the game will at least have a comfy atmosphere and immersive world, which both of the previous games lacked, no clue about endgame though, which is unsettling.

Since the trial captains are type specialists I feel like they wouldn't not give you battles against them, even if it's just post game matches or as them appearing in some battle facility. I mean it would be too much of a waste to not battle them at least once.

Iliam's for example doubles up with a Team Skull event. So you're fighting them as you're fighting the wild Pokemon you need to look for.
