I've played through gen 2 a million times and I've never once had to grind, and in my most recent playthrough, I used a Dragonite AND a Tyranitar.

It's sorta high price for a pokémon game, but it's good for HGSS, especially if it was in good condition, in box, whatever. It's excellent if it had the pokéwalker too.

Gotta agree with this. Ecruteak City is at a threeway intersection, you can pretty much go along any route you choose before meeting certain progression blockers, so all the trainers and encounters are at the same base level for that 1/3rd of the game world. Make sure you grind yourself up 5+ levels between each city or you'll be underleveled for the later gyms and challenges.

I've battled every trainer in Kanto and my team is sitting at level 55. Red's pokémon are all level 80s.

Let's be honest, the game is easy but RNG can fuck you over silly if you don't account for it. I say that just grind up to lv 45 to beat the e4 easy mode and red can be done by a lv 60 Donphan, he is really a sad joke.

You can expect a shitty level curve, shitty pokemon distribution, and a shitty story.

You can expect a region that isn't particularly interesting, followed by a second region that also isn't particularly interesting.

This is all followed by what is one of the most epic battles in the series so everybody forgets about all of the shit they just waded through.

Expect tons of great side-content like Battle Frontier and Pokeathalon. Though some side-content, like the Safari Zone, also sucks.

Expect lots of loving extra touches, like GB Sounds and Pokemon following the trainer.

Expect otherwise cool features like gym leader rematches locked behind bullshit real-time dependent mechanics that make them more of a chore than they are worth.

I disagree with fans that say it is the pinnacle of the series, but I understand what they love about it. There is a lot to love here. But god damn is it an uneven package.
