Has there ever been an ingame explanation to why fish pokemon

It ruins the immersion for me. I forgive gyarados because of the chinese dragon thing though. But once he evolves, that shrimp thing becomes cringeworthy.

Especially now that your location reflects in the actual battle, they can't do anything but make them float

For the purpose of battling, the pokeball actually just emits a hologram so there's no animal cruelty involved.

Why do you not need to feed them? This always takes me out of the imersion. I just want the pokemon to die if you dont feed them for a couple of days.

It does take me out of the immersion, but because Pokemon can shoot water attacks maybe they can shoot enough water around them to stand upright. Or they just don't breath water because they're Pokemon. It's better than them being unable to be used on land.

Same reason why you can send out Groudon and standing around while literally in space far above Earth, or while flying in the sky. And then use Earthquake when there isn't any ground nearby.

Does this happen in the anime? I don't watch it anything close to frequently enough to have come across it. What if they're in the middle of a city and someone sends out a fish Pokemon? Does it float? Or do the writers just avoid it?

This is a possible solution for the smaller fishes like finneon or magikarp. It would be understandable for them to hop around hopelessly whenever they are thrown out of the water.

But think about the design of things like school wishiwashi, seaking, etc. It would be a lot more distracting to have all these big fishes constantly jumping for air than having them just float in the screen.

I think of the games as more of a rough idea of what's happening on your adventure and the rest is left up to imagination. In the forrest and send out a water pokemon? In my mind there was a lake or some small body of water around. Surfing in the middle of the ocean and send out a land lubbing pokemon? It fights off the back of the pokemon you're surfing on or there's convenient ocean debri around.
