No, that's stupid. The anime was shit when it first aired and kids realized that after he lost the first time. That's just jaded adults looking back on their childhood and thinking it was amazing and wanting to go back to a simpler time.

It's also not what the director was obviously trying to convey. He had a hate boner for kids and their naivety, he wanted their paradise to be destroyed and for them to GROW UP and realize that life fucking sucks and is filled with nothing but rat races and you either fit into the system or you become a failure manchild.

That's why Gary gives up being a trainer and becomes a scientist, it's why Brock goes home and gives up chasing girls and just takes care of his siblings and why we don't get to see Trainers from Ash's past, they all gave up. The only one that doesn't give up is Ash, that's why he's still "ten".
