When mutations happen, if what changes is beneficial, then chances are you have a higher chance of mating, since it lets you survive better. Whales, for example, didn't really need legs. So when one whale that had a mutation making his legs slightly smaller, meaning that less oxygen would be wasted sending it to the legs, it was better able to live in the water, where the cold is a serious danger. Blubber, which is different from fat, mind you, is similar. Why do you think that whales and seals both managed to have it? Not because "blubber makes you better for survival so they evolved it so they could survive better", but "the same or similar mutation happened at one point, and it built up over time" Even so, the blubber of whales and seals are different, so it isn't the same, but similar. Things don't evolve shit because they need it, when something evolves that is beneficial, that animal is better able to survive, so it reproduces more, spreading its gene.
