In HGSS he was 14, not 16. He didn't rrally age and look that different from his FRLG self, which he is was 11. XY/B2W2 was at the very least 7 years after FRLG, so if SM is like 3 years or more after XY, he's gonna be in his early 20s. Enough of a difference in age were characters in Pokemon blend together for the younger ages, and the adults are strikingly dofferent in artstyle.
