Because nearly everyone bitched about chibi in XY and ORAS, so they went for full proportions even though it looks like garbled, pixelated trash on the terrible 3DS screen which is the exact reason they went for chibi in the first place.

I actually have to agree. I thought I'd prefer this to the chibi models but after playing the demo, I don't like it as much. Plus, your character feels heavy, almost tank-like, for some reason. I suspect the movement speed doesn't quite line up with the animation speed... or something like that.
